Human Services Practitioner, Associate in Applied Science

Program Details

Caring for children and adults with disabilities is a challenging and rewarding experience. The Human Services Practitioner program prepares potential direct service workers with classroom theory and lab experiences plus an internship. It is designed for people working in the field or pursuing a direct service career. The program is designed to train individuals to provide residential, vocational, or education supports to people with disabilities in their communities. The courses are designed to meet the competencies identified in the National Skills Standards for Community Based Human Service Practitioners and National Health Care Skill Standards. All core courses are offered online at Alexandria Technical College, but provided through South Central College in Mankato, Minnesota.

Employment Opportunities

Graduates are eligible for positions in several areas in the human services field with children, adolescents, young adults/adults, and senior citizens. The graduating student may serve people with developmental disabilities, physical disabilities, mental illness, substance abuse, traumatic brain injury, and related conditions. Students who may be interested in social work, sociology, psychology or any other health or social areas may want to consider this program as a well-rounded educational base for these areas of study. In 1996, the Minnesota legislature passed legislation which approved this accredited diploma as meeting the educational criteria for obtaining the equivalent of Qualified Mental Retardation Professional (QMRP) status in day and supervised living services in Minnesota. The equivalent position is termed Designator Coordinator. Graduates can expect to work in the community supports field in vocational, residential, behavior, health, or education areas.
